Why is a Speech Therapist in the Physio Room?

How does a speechie or speech pathologist help with learning movement? Followed by what happens between choosing to move and actually moving. Both topics will be covered today with a slight focus on language in lieu of speech pathology week ending this last Saturday.

A speech pathologist may not seem to have a clear connection to movement. But motor plans are laid through language and understanding what movement needs to be completed and receiving feedback are language skills. Language acquisition comes in two categories: receptive and expressive. Receptive language is about understanding and comprehension. This is very important in any situation of picking up a new skill.

Next we move on to the process between making the choice to move and actually moving. The brain has many steps it takes after you choose to move. It needs to find the right motor plan and activate it. This process usually happens in a split second, but in some individuals there is a delay. This episode covers how to pick up on a delay and what to do about it to prevent your child becoming frustrated and misunderstood.

This episode goes out the week after Speech Pathology Week, and the Sunday at the end of it is Father's Day.
