Balance, balance, balance. This is an interesting term which we use all the time, but what does it actually mean? It is so easy to put down clumsiness and delays in gross motor skills to poor balance without actually thinking about what constitutes the concept of balance. Only through understanding balance can we start addressing how to improve balance.

This is a common question that comes up: my child doesn’t crawl, he just moves around on his bottom, does this mean something is wrong? Development is different for every child, the most important thing is to learn the skills required to keep moving along the developmental curve. With this in mind, what is the difference with bum shuffling and crawling and does it matter if a child moves around on their bottom rather than crawling?

In current times with NDIS, there has become very distinct lines between disciplines. A child goes to a speech pathologist to acquire speech and language, a physiotherapist for movement, and occupational therapist for play, the list goes on. Previously, disciplines were more intertwined. Therapists worked together to create the best result for a child. They combined their joint knowledge to solve a specific problem rather than having individual goals that don’t always coincide.

Entering into the period of motherhood is a daunting task. There is so much information out there and it is hard to know what is relevant and what is not. You want the best for your child and to do everything you possibly can. However, you are also exhausted, sleep deprived, hungry, never have anytime for yourself, lonely, missing work…the list goes on.

Your precious little one has finally arrived. It is a whirlwind of hugs, sleepless nights, high emotions, gorgeous cuddles, and immense fatigue. Then there is the constant worry, are they putting enough weight on, are they feeding, how many dirty nappies in 24 hours, how much time do they spend in tummy time.
